Here’s an excellent example of what can be accomplished with a year round greenhouse in cold weather climate. This particular greenhouse is in Colorado which is cold for much of the year, but inside this cozy dome greenhouse, the plants are growing happily. Take a tour with Buckhorn Gardens manager and permaculturist Breigh Peterson. It’s inspiring to view the greenhouse structure with its interplay of light and water, warmth and air. It also has curved raised beds of vegetables and flowers; fish tanks moderating the temperature; vertical trellises and shelves to use vertical space. Outdoors a huge garden of row crops and a young orchard are complemented by free-roaming chickens and ducks!

Hi,
I currently have a book out entitled THE BIODOME GARDEN BOOK, which is available in paperback on Amazon, and it’s pretty comprehensive as far as explaining the concept of passive solar greenhouse gardening while also including hydroponics and a 900 gallon fish tank. The Biodome Garden, which I designed thirty years ago, is a circular, domed, raised garden unit. However, many readers have contacted me about where to get the dome to cover it, and that’s a problem, so maybe I could add your website to the website listings I have included at the end of the book. The book has been extremely popular, and sales are way up, so it might send some traffic your way. My website is http://www.biodomegreenhouse.com. The book is all about self-sufficiency and organic gardening.

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something that I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
My Biodome Garden isn’t all that complicated to build, actually. Silo staves are a little difficult to come by, but the kinds of garden stones that you can buy from Lowes and Home Depot work fine for the circular vegetable bed. Since I last posted, I found someone in my area who is manufacturing for me, fiberglass domes and fish tanks, and the biofilter that I describe in my book. I’m also adding 4′ wide Quonset-type panels to connect between half-domes to extend the greenhouse into an oblong greenhouse that can go easily to 28′ long, but we’ll have to put one together before going any longer to make sure it doesn’t sag. The city of Ottawa is building one of my Biodome Gardens in their city park, so that’s going to be kind of cool.
My website is at http://www.biodomegarden.com if anyone wants to go there. It gives lots of information for those wanting to build their own similar passive solar greenhouses.
